Tomorrow, September 29, 2018, is National Public Lands Day in the USA. It’s time for you to get out and celebrate or help.
We are fortunate in the US to have lots of public land with amazing trails on them. This Saturday is the annual day when we take a moment to truly appreciate our public lands. On this day you can celebrate and be grateful for the public lands in the USA. I encourage you to take time out this Saturday to acknowledge the day, such as hiking or volunteering. Or you can even visit a National Park for free!
What Is National Public Lands Day?
This is an annual event that takes place on the 4th Saturday in September every year. The day is organized by the National Environmental Education Fund. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event that is the nation’s largest single day volunteer effort.
The National Park Service sums up what this day is all about nicely, “It celebrates the connection between people and green space in their community, inspires environmental stewardship, and encourages use of open space for education, recreation, and general health.”
Visit A National Park For Free!
Yes, this day is a chance for you to visit a National Park for free. What a great way to celebrate our public lands then by spending the day in one of the amazing US National Parks.
Celebrate By Going For A Hike On Public Land
What a great excuse to get outside and go for a walk. Take a nice day hike with your family to some public lands near you.
Look for trails at your closest National Forest, National Park, or BLM land. Here are 6 National Parks in the Rockies you should check out and 3 Rocky Mountain National Monuments worth visiting.
Help By Volunteering With Local Groups
There are lots of local conservation organizations located across the country. Many of these local groups rely on volunteers to get a lot of their work done. You can do a quick google search to see what is possible in your area. Or check your local newspaper or other classified to see what’s going on.
There may be a local event going on already that you can attend to celebrate or help with.
If you are like me and use public lands then this is your chance to say thank you.
