It is time to book New Zealand’s Great Walks for the 2018/2019 Great Walks season. The online booking system for the Great Walks will be available for the different walks at various days during June 2018.
I love to go hiking and New Zealand has some of the best walks and multi-day hikes anywhere in the world. Some of these are great to do with kids and others are better done with just adults. One of the hardest parts of setting up these walks is just planning far enough in advance. I just wanted to give you a heads up about when it is possible to book these walks for the upcoming Great Walks Season. If you are interested then I recommend you book these as soon as you can, because there is limited space and they fill up quickly.
When Is The Great Walks Season?
Yes, these walks have a prime time of year when the weather is the best, known as the Great Walks Season. The Great Walk season is listed as from October 23, 2018 to April 30, 2019. During this time you must book huts or campsites.
How Do I Book New Zealand’s Great Walks?
If you are looking to walk one of the great walks as an independent walker then you need to book ahead of time. There are a limited number of permits available for independent walkers each day.
The Department of Conservation has a great website for booking the walks and tons of good info on the walks.
However, if you don’t know or want to plan in advance you can always look to take one of the great walks though a company on a guided walk. The private companies stay at different huts/lodges on the trails and it is possible to book those on shorter notice. Be aware though, these companies charge much higher prices than doing it independently.
