Over years of hiking with my kids I have found that this is the single most important thing to bring when I go hiking with kids. This will make sure your hike is fun as opposed to unpleasant.
Similar to most parents who take their kids hiking I’ve had fun, memorable days and awful unpleasant ones. Sometimes it just seems that the kids are not in the mood for a hike. Other days I’m not really feeling the best and I make the hike no fun. I’ve tried all kinds of tricks and secrets to keep everyone happy on the trail to varying levels of success. Thanks to my trial and error, I can now can now tell you that the most important thing to bring along is a special snack, like gummy treats!
Need The Right Mindset
Besides what’s important to bring along on your hike I want to give you another one of my secrets.
The secret to hiking with kids is to have the right mindset. You need to remember that the goal of those first hikes is to have fun, not to get to some preassigned destination. Go slow, smell the flowers, and have fun along the way.
Once you have the correct mindset, you are well on your way to having a good hike.
The Most Important Thing To Bring Hiking With Kids Is Gummy Treats
Now that you know my top secret I’ll share with you the most important thing to bring along – gummy treats.
I know that this sounds a bit strange, but trust me. Over the years I’ve found that it helps to bring along some gummy treats when we go hiking. Then I can hand out a couple here and a couple there.
The key is to spread them out and not give your kids the whole bag at once. I now call them energy bursts because they do help the kids get a little bit of energy. They are good to have one or two before a steep climb or one or two after hiking for a while.
Hiking Gear To Bring When Hiking With Kids
The gummy treats are the most important thing to bring along. However, you should bring along some other gear to make sure that you and your kids are safe in the outdoors and prepared for anything.
In addition to the gummy treats, here is some other hiking gear that you must bring along with you when hiking with kids. All of this other gear will keep you safe, warm, dry, and ready for emergencies because you should always be prepared when hiking with kids.
